MAHANAIM ENGLISH COURSE DESCRIPTION

ESL Reading I
[READ 010]

Prerequisites: NONE
A beginner ESL course that develops students’ reading and vocabulary skills. The class focuses on helping students understand and practice the basic reading skills required for academic as well as pleasure reading. Students will focus on identifying the main idea, understanding context clues, and summarizing information as they read each assigned passage.

ESL Reading II
[READ 020]

Prerequisites: READ 010 or Intermediate level placement exam scores
An intermediate ESL reading course that develops students’ reading and vocabulary skills . Students will learn successful reading strategies while engaging in analyzing readings, skimming and scanning for information, practicing the usage of different word forms, identifying vocabulary in context, distinguishing fact from opinion, identifying purpose and tone, and participating in internet activities.

ESL Reading III
[READ 030]

Prerequisites: ESL Reading II OR advanced-level placement exam scores
An advanced ESL reading course that develops students’ reading and comprehension skills through advanced academic text encompassing areas such as trends in living, issues in society, justice and crime, and science and history. Students will be expected to produce oral and written reports with an emphasis on grammar, syntax, and mechanics. The majority of the class work will focus on group discussions of the material.

ESL Writing I
[WRIT 010]

Prerequisites: NONE
A beginner ESL writing course that introduces students to the basic skills required for good writing and helps them to express themselves freely in English. Through individual, pair, and group tasks, students will learn the fundamental principles of prewriting, planning, drafting, revising, and editing as they focus on creating basic sentences and work their way toward constructing guided paragraphs.

ESL Writing II
[WRIT 020]

Prerequisites: WRIT 010 or intermediate CELSA scores
An intermediate ESL writing course that begins with a review of sentence structure, and then focuses on the systematic process of writing paragraphs. Students will learn the organizational principles necessary to make the transition from sentences to paragraphs in English through prewriting, writing, and revising. This course also emphasizes collaborative writing and peer feedback.

ESL Writing III
[WRIT 030]

Prerequisites: ESL Writing II OR advanced-level placement exam scores
An advanced ESL writing course that introduces students to the process of paragraph development and teaches them to generate ideas within a variety of rhetorical patterns. This course emphasizes working with model paragraphs, producing original writing, editing practice, and grammar with proper sequencing. Students will make the transition from writing individual paragraphs to 5-paragraph comprehensive essays through individual and group projects, direct instruction, and teacher feedback.

ESL Communications I
[COMM 010]

Prerequisites: NONE
A beginner ESL listening and speaking course that exposes students to English spoken in real life situations and provides opportunities to make comments and answer questions posed in English. Students will be able to hone in on their listening skills, response time, pronunciation, dictation skills, and speaking skills. In addition, students will also be challenged to build their vocabulary and develop the ability to think critically throughout this course.

ESL Communications II
[COMM 020]

Prerequisites: COMM 010 or intermediate CELSA scores
An intermediate ESL listening and speaking course that develops students’ listening and speaking skills using a variety of academic as well as entertaining subjects through pair and group discussions. Students will learn how to initiate and prolong conversation through the constant practice and repetition of key sentence structures as they develop their listening, response time, pronunciation, dictation, and speaking skills. In addition, students will also be challenged to listen to and speak about academic content, build their vocabulary, and develop critical thinking skills throughout this course.

ESL Communications III
[COMM 030]

Prerequisites: ESL Communications II OR advanced-level placement exam scores
An advanced ESL listening and speaking course which develops students’ listening and speaking skills through guest speakers who talk about various topics. Students will devise relevant response papers and oral presentations through critical listening. In addition, a substantial amount of class time will be devoted to class discussions and debates. Furthermore, students will continue to be challenged to listen to and speak about academic content, build their vocabulary, and develop critical thinking skills throughout this course.

ESL Interactive English I
[INTE 010]

Prerequisites: NONE
A beginner ESL computer course driven by Longman English Interactive 2 software. This is an integrated skills program that provides instruction and practice in grammar, speaking, listening, vocabulary, pronunciation, reading, and writing. A teacher will always be available for help, support, and progress checks, but students will complete the majority of this coursework independently.

ESL Interactive English II
[INTE 020]

Prerequisites: INTE 010 or intermediate CELSA scores
An intermediate ESL computer course driven by Longman English Interactive 3 Software. This is an integrated skills program that provides instruction and practice in grammar, speaking, listening, vocabulary, pronunciation, reading, and writing. A teacher will always be available for help, support, and progress checks, but students will complete the majority of this coursework independently.

ESL Interactive English III
[INTE 030]

Prerequisites: ESL Interactive English II OR advanced-level placement exam scores
An advanced ESL computer course driven by Longman English Interactive 4 Software. This is an integrated skills program that provides instruction and practice in grammar, speaking, listening, vocabulary, pronunciation, reading, and writing. A teacher will always be available for help, support, and progress checks, but students will complete the majority of this coursework independently.

ESL Literature I: Stories and Dialogs
[LIT 010]

Prerequisites: NONE
A beginner ESL reading course which features a variety of themes and issues through dialogs and stories about ordinary people. Students will participate in reading and discussing these dialogs and stories as they link them to their own experiences. Through individual and pair work, students will develop their comprehension and reading skills, vocabulary, and overall fluency in English.

ESL Literature II: American Stories
[LIT 020]

Prerequisites: LIT 010 or intermediate CELSA scores
An intermediate ESL reading course that exposes students to classic American literature from authors such as O’Henry, Mark Twain, Herman Melville, and Edgar Allan Poe. Students will develop reading comprehension and language skills through the discussion of short novels in both small and large group settings while being encouraged to think critically and express their thoughts and opinions freely.

ESL Literature III: American Classics
[LIT 030]

Pre-Requisites: ESL Reading II or advanced-level placement exam scores
An advanced ESL reading course in which the student will read and discuss several full-length novels. Through this course, the student will sharpen their reading, speaking, vocabulary, writing and critical thinking skills through literary analysis, classroom debate, and connections to personal experience.

ESL Grammar I
[GRAM 010]

Prerequisites: NONE
A beginner ESL grammar course which presents students with a foundation of English grammar and proper usage by providing extensive and varied practice that encourages growth in all areas of language use. The major topics of study include verb tenses, asking questions, nouns/pronouns, modal auxiliaries, conjunctions, comparisons, count and non-count nouns/articles, clauses, gerunds/infinitives, phrasal verbs, and preposition combinations.

ESL Grammar II
[GRAM 020]

Prerequisites: GRAM 010 or intermediate CELSA scores
An intermediate ESL grammar course which develops the students’ foundation of English grammar and proper usage by providing extensive and varied practice that encourages growth in all areas of language use. The major topics of study include subject-verb agreement, modals, the passive, gerunds/infinitives, and reduction of adverb clauses to modifying adverbial phrases.

ESL Grammar III: Creative Writing
[GRAM 030]

Prerequisites: GRAM 020 or advanced CELSA scores
An advanced ESL grammar course which further develops the students’ foundation of English grammar and proper usage by providing extensive and varied practice that encourages growth in all areas of language use. The major topics of study include perfect and progressive tenses, the passive, and the different uses of connectives and conditionals.

Bible Study for Non-Theology Students I
[BIST 010]

Prerequisites: NONE
This institutional course is required for all non-theology studies students for all terms of their respective programs. This course allows students to create depth in their hearts and minds while learning the ethos of Mahanaim from a spiritual perspective. This course meets five times a week, one hour per session.

Bible Study for Non-Theology Students II
[BIST 020]

Prerequisites: Bible Study for Non-Theology Students I
This institutional course is required for all non-theology studies students for all terms of their respective programs. This course allows students to create depth in their hearts and minds while learning the ethos of Mahanaim from a spiritual perspective. This course meets five times a week, one hour per session.
